Senate Committee Advances Rail Safety Bill Featured

Written by

A Senate committee on Wednesday approved a rail-safety bill that was introduced in response to the toxic train derailment in East Palestine last February. This, as another Norfolk Southern train derailed in New Castle Pennsylvania yesterday, only about 20 miles from East Palestine. Thankfully this time no hazardous materials were onboard.

The bill, which was advanced by the Senate Commerce Committee, would increase inspections on trains carrying hazardous materials and increase penalties on rail companies for crashes. However, as reported by the AP, some believe the bill is unlikely to get the 60 votes needed to pass the Senate due to strong Republican opposition.

Senator Ted Cruz says he’s against the bill because he believes it will give too much power to the Biden administration to restrict the shipment of coal and fossil fuels. However, Republican J.D. Vance of Ohio fully supports the bill saying, “There will be another East Palestine in this country if we do not pass the Railway Safety Act. It’s that simple.”
