Unintentional Shooting in Akron Leaves One Woman Dead Featured

An unintentional shooting late Friday night in Akron claimed the life of a 29-year-old woman.

Akron Police report that 31-year-old Denzel Ayers accidentally fired off a shot from a loaded handgun while sitting in the passenger's seat of a vehicle, while the victim was in the driver’s seat. That single shot grazed Ayers leg before striking the woman.Two other passengers were in the back of the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Police arrived on the scene around 11:30 pm and found the victim outside a residence in the 900 block of Stadelman Ave. She was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead shortly after. Ayers was treated for his non-life-threatening injury and later booked into the Summit County Jail on charges of negligent homicide and having weapons while intoxicated.

The case remains under investigation while Ayers has a pre-trial hearing scheduled for December 21st in Akron Municipal Court.
