Some Ohio Schools Choosing to Arm Teachers and Staff Featured

Written by

46 school districts in Ohio have opted to arm teachers and staff. This, a year after the number of minimum training hours was lowered from 700 to 24.

As reported by the Beacon Journal, the names of teachers and staff carrying guns is not public record but a list of participating schools has been provided by the Ohio Department of Public Safety. The ultimate decision to arm teachers has been left up to school boards, as Gov. DeWine said after signing House Bill 99 into law, arming teachers is not a mandate but a local choice. And that, "each school board will determine what is best for their students, their staff, and their community."

Most urban and suburban schools voted against arming staff, but those in rural areas have taken the option, citing long emergency response times among the reasons. However, the majority of Ohio districts have chosen not to arm staff, with only 46 districts submitting rosters out of 611 public schools and 324 community or charter schools.
