Chamber Offers Support, Outlines Desired Business Agenda For New Mayor Featured

Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce officials issued a statement pledging their support for Akron's next Mayor, Shammas Malik, while at the same time outlining the business community's desired agenda.

This, after voters in Tuesday's primary overwhelmingly chose Malik out of a seven candidate field. He'll run unopposed in the November General Election, and take office January 1st.

Chamber officials say their priorities include making downtown a competitive option for companies that want to relocate or expand, making neighborhoods vibrant place to live and work, and doubling down on emerging opportunities in the region's polymer industry.

In a press release, Chamber leaders also talked the need to keep a mindset focused on economic growth, but, they add, " If a large percentage of our population can’t access opportunity, we will never overcome the economic challenges ahead. This includes prioritizing the success of the students that are our future workforcemany of whom are currently at Akron Public Schools, Stark State College, and The University of Akron. Increasing support and access to youth employment, internships and apprenticeships will help, as well as addressing other barriers to adult employment. We also need to increase support for small, woman and minority-owned companies – to foster an economic climate where everyone can prosper."
