Student Athletes of the Week: Calvin Alexander & Savannah Bunn: Ellet High School Featured

Written by

This week our 1590 WAKR Male Student Athlete of the Week is Calvin Alexander, a senior football player from Ellet High School.

He says that playing sports in Ellet is a source of pride for not only the school, but the Ellet community as a whole.

“Everybody in the community is involved, and everyone loves football and loves sports in the community,” he said.

Alexander garnered 1st team All-City honors, was a three year letterman, and was All-District Honorable Mention during his senior year.

His head coach, Chuck Shuman says that Calvin is a true leader on and off the field.

“He’s a treasure to have,” Shuman said. “He’s intense, focused and a very responsible kind of guy, and we’ve been fortunate to have had him over the past four years.”

Away from the field, Calvin is a member of Junior Leadership, Student Council, Drama Club, and is the Vice President of his senior class.

“I just love helping others and being able to lead whenever I can.”

Upon graduation in the spring of 2020, Alexander plans on attending the University of Akron to study civil engineering.

Our next Female Student Athlete of the Week is Savannah Bunn, a Senior soccer player from Ellet High School.

Savannah says that soccer has been a part of her life from a young age.

“I love doing it every day,” she said. “

“I’m friends with most of my teammates and when we’re on the field, we’re connected and that comes from our relationship off the field.”

Head Coach Justin Dimengo says that her perseverance and determination is what makes her a great athlete as well as a student.

“During her first three years, she was our junior varsity goalkeeper as she learned how to play what I would say is the most difficult position on the field,” he said.

“This season, she earned the spot of our starting varsity goalkeeper. She made countless great save after great save in some really huge moments throughout the season.”

That also carries off the field, Dimengo continues.

“She does a great job excelling in the classroom while playing three varsity sports throughout the school year: soccer, bowling, and softball.”

In addition to being a three sport athlete, she is also a member of the National Honor Society and ranked near the top of her senior class.

Upon graduation in the spring she plans on attending the University of Akron to study physical therapy or sports medicine.

We wish Calvin and Savannah the best in all of their future endeavors.
