Governor Mike DeWine announcing a sweeping police reform bill that is ready to be introduced to the Ohio General Assembly in the next few days. During his press conference Wednesday, the governor laid out key initiatives in the bill, including increasing accountability and transparency in law enforcement.

One of the ways to do that, DeWine says, is to start treating law enforcement much like we do other professions in Ohio, including the Ohio Bar that oversees lawyers, the medical board that oversees doctors, and so on.

Additionally, the new reform bill would create a state use-of-force database that logs all incidents of force by police, it would require independent investigations into those use-of-force incidents, and would establish an independent and sustainable funding source for law enforcement training.

During the governor's press conference Wednesday, he was asked about the fatal police shooting involving teenager Ma'Khia Bryant, a 16-year-old Black girl. Governor DeWine did not speak much of the incident, only saying the investigation is ongoing and to "wait for the facts" and to "let the investigation play out."

Ohio BCI is investigating the shooting.
