A Toledo man is facing federal charges after authorities say he threatened to kill the Vice President during a recent visit to Northwest Ohio—and investigators say they uncovered additional crimes while looking into the case.
A federal grand jury has indicted Shannon Mathre, 33, accusing him of making a threat to take the Vice President’s life. According to court documents, Mathre allegedly said he planned to locate the Vice President and use a firearm to carry out the attack. He was arrested by U.S. Secret Service agents on Feb. 6.
During the investigation, federal agents say they also found multiple digital files that allegedly contained child sexual abuse material. Prosecutors now charge Mathre with receiving and distributing those images between late December 2025 and late January 2026.
Federal officials say threats against public officials are treated as serious crimes and credited coordination between the Secret Service, Toledo Police, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol for the arrest.
Mathre made his initial appearance before a federal magistrate judge and remains in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for Feb. 11.
If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison on the threat charge and up to 20 years on the child-exploitation charge.
