Ohio’s top watchdog is asking for the public’s help in protecting taxpayer dollars.
Keith Faber, Ohio’s State Auditor, has launched a new webpage where citizens can directly report suspected fraud, waste, or abuse involving public money. The goal, Faber says, is to make it easier for Ohioans to speak up, and to make sure concerns don’t fall through the cracks.
The move comes as the Auditor’s Office reports a rise in complaints involving childcare, home healthcare, and eldercare providers, particularly those receiving state and federal funding, including Medicaid.
In response to a request from the Ohio Legislature signed by 41 state representatives, the Ohio Auditor of State is expanding investigations and audits of state agencies. Those agencies are being asked to re-verify their oversight of facilities receiving public funds.
According to Faber, his office has already completed more than 50 compliance examinations of providers and identified $4.5 million in improper payments.
Faber says allegations involving taxpayer dollars must be taken seriously, even when they don’t ultimately lead to a finding of fraud. He emphasized that every credible tip is reviewed, and when evidence supports it, cases are forwarded for prosecution.
Ohioans who believe they have evidence of wrongdoing are encouraged to call the fraud hotline: 1-866-FRAUD-OH or submit a report online HERE.
