Hoban/STVM Get Ready For "Holy War"

Tim Tyrrell of Hoban discussed the upcoming Holy War between the Knights and St. Vincent-St. Mary at Akron's Infocision Stadium later this evening.

STVM head coach Bobby Nickol also joined the show to talk about the matchup tonight.

This week our 1590 WAKR Female Student Athlete of the Week is Madison Bennett, a junior soccer player from Norton High School.

Madison says the great thing about competing for Norton is the relationships between her teammates and the coaching staff.

She says this year’s team has a good group of freshmen and as an experienced player, it’s up to her to lead them on the pitch.

“We've just been playing hard and we're trying to adjust on the field, we're a quality team and we've learned a lot in the past season,'' she says.

"I try to lead the freshmen vocally, I try to stay positive and build relationships."

Bennett is a 3-year letter winner for the Panthers and plays attacking midfield.

She says she likes it because of the opportunity to keep her teammates involved.

Her coach Daniel DiPasquale says her versatility on the pitch is what makes her a great player.

“Madison is a complete soccer player!” he explained.

“She plays wherever is needed for what’s best for her team.”

“As good as she is as a soccer player, she’s also an even better person,” said DiPasquale.

Away from soccer, Madison works just as hard in the classroom, maintaining her grades and also staying active in her school community.

She’s a member of the Key Club, Pep Club, Spanish Club, Homecoming/Prom Committee, and serves as a Student Council Class Officer.
In the community, she’s participated in a family missions trip to Cambodia.

We wish Madison all the best in her future endeavors.

This week our 1590 WAKR Male Student Athlete of the Week is Tyler Scott, a junior football player from Norton High School.

Tyler is a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and track and field. He says the balance between academics and athletics is a challenge that he readily accepts.

“Since I was little, father and mother have always taught me that grades come first," he said.

"If you're going to participate in  school and want to play (sports) why not be the best at it? "

On the football field, he says the camaraderie between his fellow players and coaches has led to success on the gridiron thus far.

“It's pretty fun and we have a lot more camaraderie this year, and we're winning so it's fun," Scott explained.

His head coach, Kevin Pollock, who is in his first year with the Panthers says  that Scott is a natural with his skill set at both running back and defensive back.

"He’s an incredibly naturally gifted athlete who doesnt rely on his skill but works his butt off,” Pollock explained.

Off the field, Scott is also a great young man to be around, says Pollock.

“Tyler is an outstanding playmaker, but also a great person. Always smiling, always doing the right things. Fun kid to be around and its special to watch him play."

We wish Tyler the best in all of his future endeavors.

Zips head football coach Terry Bowden spoke with Sam and Brad to talk about the win over Northwestern this past weekend and the upcoming game against Iowa State.
