The Ohio Department of Health is urging parents to take extra precautions this flu season after confirming the state’s first pediatric flu-related death of the year.

Health officials say the child, a teen from Greene County, died after complications from influenza. While cases like this are rare, state leaders say it’s a sobering reminder that the flu can be serious, especially for children.

“This death is tragic, and our hearts go out to the family,” said Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff. “It also reminds us that influenza is not just a mild illness. Vaccination and prevention truly matter.”

Flu activity in Ohio typically peaks between December and February, and health officials say cases have been rising steadily in recent weeks. Each year, the state records anywhere from one to seven flu-related deaths among children.

Health experts continue to urge families to take steps to protect themselves, including getting the flu vaccine, washing hands often, staying home when sick, and covering coughs and sneezes. Antiviral medications can also help reduce the severity of illness if taken early.

Flu shots remain widely available at doctors’ offices, pharmacies, and local health departments.
