A grand jury asked to evaluate evidence in the shooting death of 15-year-old Jazmir Tucker, by an Akron Police officer on Thanksgiving last year, declined to return any criminal charges.
Summit County prosecutors turned the case of the shooting outside Miller South School, over to the Mahoning County prosecutor’s office, which conducted an independent investigation, and presented evidence to a grand jury of Summit County citizens this week.
After the grand jury’s decision, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik, and Police Chief Brian Harding, released joint statement, which reads in part “We want to again send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jazmir Tucker” as they continue to mourn his loss. We want to thank the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for investigating this case, and the Mahoning County prosecutor’s office for accepting the investigation to present to a grand jury. We’d also like to thank the members of the Summit County grand jury, for honorably performing their Civic duty. We want to reiterate that this investigation was handled independently from the city of Akron.”
Now that the criminal process has concluded, the Akron Police department will conduct what they are calling a “thorough internal investigation” to determine if any police department policies or procedures were violated. Once that investigation is complete, they say that the results will be made available to the public, and will be shared with the city’s independent police auditor for his review as well.
