Northeast Ohio jails and correctional facilities are receiving new funding to expand addiction treatment for incarcerated individuals, part of a statewide effort announced by Dave Yost.
Attorney General Dave Yost awarded a new round of opioid settlement grants aimed at helping inmates access treatment, detox support, and recovery services — with funding going directly to facilities in Cuyahoga, Summit, and Portage counties.
The Portage County Jail received $200,000 to support addiction treatment services for inmates.
In Summit County, the Summit County Community-Based Correctional Facility was awarded $134,240 to continue treatment and recovery programming for nonviolent offenders.
The McDonnell Community-Based Correctional Facility in Cuyahoga County also received $134,240 to support addiction services for those in custody.
“These grants do more than prevent overdoses, they give inmates a real chance to break the cycle of addiction,” Yost said in a statement.
The funding comes from Ohio’s Opioid Remediation Grant Program, which uses settlement dollars from opioid lawsuits. Since March, the program has awarded more than $10.9 million statewide, with plans to distribute up to $60 million over the next several years.
Overdose remains one of the leading causes of death among Ohio jail inmates, making access to treatment a growing priority for local and state leaders.
Applications for the next round of grants are expected to open in January 2026.
