A 28 year old man has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies including murder, after a series of violent incidents in Akron very early Thursday morning.

Police say they responded to a call about a shooting at a residence in the 100 block of East Wilbeth Road, in the City’s Firestone Park neighborhood, at 12:05AM, where they found 32 year old Darnell E. McGrady, dead from gunshot wounds, allegedly inflicted by the suspect they have in custody now, Byron Johnson, and another man, who fled the scene in a vehicle police tracked to a home in the 1000 block of Silvercrest Avenue, in Kenmore.

There, they say Johnson forced his way into the home, punched a 65 year old woman they say he knew, (though they haven’t yet said how he knew her), and that he stole some money. She was taken to the hospital, and treated for what are described as non life-threatening injuries.

But the story doesn’t end there.

Next, Police say they used OnStar to track Johnson and the other suspect to a home in the 500 block of Storer Avenue in West Akron, where Johnson barricaded himself inside, minutes before the 47 year old man who lived there, plus a 20 year old man, and a one year old child came out of the house, leaving the suspect inside.

That’s when SWAT arrived, and after multiple verbal commands; they got Johnson to leave the house, where he was arrested after climbing out a window.

Johnson is now charged with murder in connection to the fatal shooting, as well as Aggravated Burglary, Felonious Assault, and motor vehicle theft related to the crimes committed on Silvercrest Avenue.

Now, Detectives are trying to determine what, if any role the 20 year old man played in the incident, and they’re asking the public for tips to help them piece it all together.

*This story has been updated to include the name of the murder victim, Darnell E. McGrady.
