Akron Mayor Shammas Malik presented his proposed 2026 capital budget to Akron City Council on Monday, outlining a $341 million plan focused on core city services and infrastructure.

The proposal is $39 million less than the 2025 capital budget, reflecting a shift toward fiscal restraint as the city moves away from one-time federal relief funding. City officials say the plan prioritizes public safety, transportation, water and sewer systems, parks, and neighborhood development.

About 70 percent of the funding would come from state and federal sources, with the remaining 28 percent funded locally through income tax revenue, user fees, and other city sources.

Major highlights include:

$6.5 million for road resurfacing, covering roughly 52 miles of city streets

$1 million for sidewalk repairs, helping the city catch up on long-standing requests

Early work toward a full renovation of the Stubbs Justice Center, home to Akron police

New investments in parks, playgrounds, housing, and neighborhood development

Continued progress on water and sewer upgrades, including major tunnel and reservoir projects

City Council will review the proposal over the next several weeks, with a public hearing scheduled for Jan. 26. Under the city charter, Council must vote on the budget by Feb. 15.
