Local "recovery icon" Harmon Velie has been identified as the runner who collapsed during the Hall of Fame Marathon in Canton Sunday, eventually passing away at Mercy Hospital.
Harmon V, as he was known in the Alcoholics Anonymous community, was an active member in the fellowship and served as chairman of the executive committee at Dr. Bob's Home in the city.
Velie had been a longtime runner and athlete and despite recent medical issues, was cleared by doctors to participate in Sunday's race. He collapsed less than a half-mile from the finish line, according to the Akron Beacon Journal report.
Harmon V. was 66-years-old.
