The Akron-based organization has been awarded a $1.1 million federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, funding a new initiative called Integrated Pathways to Recovery. Paid out over three years, the grant will increase access to safe recovery housing and wraparound supports for people living with substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health conditions.

“This is a monumental win for recovery efforts in Northeast Ohio, and an even bigger victory for the people we serve,” said IBH Addiction Recovery CEO Jess Rist.

The funding comes at a critical time, as treatment providers face rising costs, local budget cuts, and uncertainty around Medicaid funding. While the grant won’t solve every financial challenge, it helps protect access to care and ensures recovery housing programs can continue without interruption.

U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes called the investment critical to improving public health and supporting long-term rehabilitation, while Akron Mayor Shammas Malik said the funding will strengthen vital wraparound services in the community.

Research shows people experience better outcomes when substance use and mental health disorders are treated together, but a lack of stable, affordable housing remains one of the biggest barriers after treatment. IBH’s new initiative will combine housing with clinical care, case management, peer support, and access to essential resources, helping individuals build stability and sustain recovery long term.
