Before you toss your live Christmas tree, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources says it can still do some good: for wildlife.

Old Christmas trees can be reused as habitat for birds, small mammals, fish, and insects. When placed in brush piles or waterways, they provide shelter, nesting areas, and protection from predators. Songbirds like cardinals and chickadees use them for cover, while fish are drawn to sunken trees that create underwater structure.

If you repurpose your tree, be sure to remove all decorations, including lights, tinsel, and ornaments, which can harm wildlife. Always get permission before placing a tree on public or private property.

In Northeast Ohio, the Mahoning County Green Team is accepting undecorated live trees through Jan. 31. Donated trees will be reused for fish and wildlife habitat in partnership with ODNR.

Each winter, ODNR also places recycled trees in lakes across the state. Anglers can find those locations at wildohio.gov or through the HuntFish OH app.
