Even if the government officially reopens this week, air travelers should still expect long delays at airports nationwide, including right here in northeast Ohio.
The past weekend saw some of the worst travel disruptions in recent memory, with more than a thousand flights canceled each day as the FAA limited air traffic due to staffing shortages during the shutdown. Those restrictions, combined with winter weather in parts of the country, caused a ripple effect of cancellations and delays.
Ren Camacho, President and CEO of the Akron-Canton Airport, says flight disruptions began last Friday, with about 10% of flights canceled.
“Even though the government will technically reopen, hopefully tomorrow, there are still some ripple effects airports across the country will be feeling,” Camacho said.
He’s hopeful operations will stabilize before the busy Thanksgiving travel period begins.
