A late-night fire Monday at the MAPS Air Museum in Green was quickly contained, thanks to a coordinated response from the Akron-Canton Airport’s fire team and the City of Green Fire Division.

According to Green Fire officials, the call came in around 11:15 p.m. on Nov. 3, after the Akron-Canton Airport Air Traffic Control Tower reported flames on the property at 2260 International Parkway. The Airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) team arrived first and contained the fire to an outdoor exhibit featuring a replica Vietnam-era Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH).

Green Fire crews arrived shortly afterward and reported the fire fully extinguished by 11:47 p.m. Damage was limited to the MASH exhibit and two exterior museum windows.

“CAK’s fire team was first on the scene and had the fire under control by the time our crews arrived,” said Fire Chief Jeff Funai. “Our partnership and joint training with CAK’s fire team are essential to minimizing damage to this cherished museum.”

Mutual aid was initially requested from Jackson Township, Greentown, Plain Township, and North Canton Fire Departments, but those units were canceled en route once the fire was contained.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The MAPS Air Museum, located on property owned by the Akron-Canton Airport, is open during regular hours today.
