Akron Police report that a 39 year old Cincinnati man they believed to be driving a stolen car, shot at them first and they returned fire; killing him, Monday morning
It happened at 8:45AM, at the intersection of Ira Avenue and Kenmore Boulevard, while they were attempting to stop a car that fit the description of a White Toyota Camry, that police Dispatch told them had been stolen.
The officers tried to administer First Aid until EMS arrived; but the driver, Marcus Leonard Smith, died from his injuries.
Three officers, with years of service ranging from nine, to thirty years, are now on paid Administrative leave, while the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations looks into the matter. They will present the results of their inquiry to the Ohio Attorney General, who will review it before passing it along to the a Grand Jury in Summit County for evaluation.
The Akron Police Bureau of Standards and Responsibility will also conduct an internal investigation, and their report will be presented to Akron’s independent Police Auditor.
