If you live in either the City of Akron, or the City of Green, and you are currently covered under their electric aggregation programs; the rate you pay for the portion of your electric bill provided through Dynergy, formerly known as Energy Harbor, is nearly doubling soon.

The City of Akron selected Dynegy’s fixed generation price of 9.24 cents/kWh, which will be applied to customer bills beginning in May of 2025 and remain in place through June of 2026, a 13-month contract.

This is a significant increase from the previous electric aggregation program (4.97 cents/kWh) which the city entered into in 2021. The higher pricing is due to significantly higher costs set by energy suppliers.

Meanwhile, in June, the City of Green’s Electric aggregation rate is also increasing. Currently, the rate is $0.0491 per kWh through May 2025. Then, the rate will increase to $0.0969

Both of those cities negotiated with Dynergy for better rates, and all Ohio Edison (First Energy) customers in those areas benefit from those negotiated rates, unless they opt out, and make a deal on their own on the open market.

That is certainly an option now for consumers, but as you’ll hear now from Akron Mayor Shammas Malik; when you do an “apples to apples” rate comparison at energychoice.ohio.gov; you need to note whether or not that rate is fixed, or variable; meaning it could rise after a certain amount of time.
