A Cleveland man is facing federal charges after authorities say a U.S. Postal Service carrier was robbed at gunpoint while delivering mail in Akron, and investigators were able to track down the suspect using technology embedded in stolen postal items.
According to court records, the robbery happened Dec. 29 on West Long Street in Akron. Prosecutors say several people wearing dark clothing and masks approached a postal carrier during her route and, under the threat of violence, demanded her postal keys. The group then stole her mail satchel, pieces of mail, and the keys to her postal vehicle before fleeing in a getaway car.
Authorities say tracking devices inside some of the stolen postal items helped investigators locate the getaway vehicle later that afternoon. Police traced the car to Kinsman Road in Cleveland, where officers attempted a traffic stop.
The driver instead sped away, then fled on foot before being captured with the help of a K9 unit. He was identified as 19-year-old Delshawn Legg of Cleveland. A second person believed to be involved in the robbery remains at large.
Investigators later determined the getaway car had been reported stolen earlier that day from an Akron car dealership.
Legg has been charged with robbery of U.S. mail and using or carrying a firearm during a crime of violence. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in federal prison.
