Akron Police and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting at 11:01 PM, Thursday night.
Police say two officers were sitting in their police cruiser filling out paperwork from a prior incident near the intersection of East Avenue and Vernon Odom Boulevard, when they heard shots fired. When they got out to invesgitate; they encountered a man with a loaded firearm, who was then shot by one of the officers; a five year, Akron Police veteran.
While they administered first aid until EMS arrived; the man who was shot, died later at the hospital.
Both the officer who shot him, and his partner, who as been with Akron Police for less than one year, have been placed on Administrative leave while the incident is under investigation.
After the investigation is complete; the case will be submitted to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office for review before being submitted to the Summit County Grand Jury for evaluation.
In addition, The Akron Police Office of Professional Standards and Accountability will conduct a separate internal investigation, and the results will be provided to the Police Chief and the City of Akron Police Auditor.
