The Ohio Department of Commerce is urging property owners to inspect roofs and attics for ice dams and winter damage following Winter Storm Fern and prolonged freezing temperatures.
Ice dams form when heat from inside a home melts roof snow, which then refreezes at the edges, potentially causing leaks and structural damage. Officials recommend watching for icicles on gutters, uneven snow on roofs, and wet spots on ceilings near exterior walls.
Homeowners are advised not to remove ice dams themselves, but instead contact a licensed roofing professional. State officials say early detection and proper insulation can help prevent costly repairs.
