Stark County officials are raising concerns after new data shows a significant increase in fatal vehicle crashes in 2025.

According to the Stark County Traffic Fatality Review Committee, the county recorded 31 fatal crashes last year, up from 25 in 2024 and 19 in 2023. Those crashes resulted in 33 deaths, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and motorcycle riders.

The committee reviewed the data during its Jan. 20 meeting and identified several contributing factors. Drug use played a role in 12 crashes, while alcohol was involved in seven. Seat belts were not worn in 14 crashes, and pedestrians were involved in 11 incidents, all of which were fatal.

In the fourth quarter of 2025 alone, Stark County experienced nine fatal crashes, with five involving unrestrained occupants and two involving pedestrians.

“These numbers represent more than statistics, they represent families forever changed,” said Laura Miller, Safe Communities Coordinator with the Stark County Sheriff’s Office. She emphasized that safer roads depend on everyday choices, including sober driving, wearing seat belts, and staying alert.

Officials are urging drivers, riders, and pedestrians to avoid impairment and distractions, slow down, use seat belts and helmets, and remain especially cautious in low-light conditions and near intersections.

Stark County leaders say preventing future tragedies is a shared responsibility, and one that requires immediate attention from the entire community.
