Several northeast Ohio school districts, including Akron City School District, are receiving substantial funding through Ohio’s $10 million School Bus Safety Grant Program.
Akron City Schools was awarded more than $115,000, one of the larger grants in the region. Other nearby districts, including Springfield Local, Stow-Munroe Falls, and Barberton-area schools, also received funding to improve student transportation safety.
The grants were announced by Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. The funding will support safety upgrades such as improved visibility equipment, monitoring technology, and other approved safety features on active buses or new purchases.
State officials say school buses are already the safest form of student transportation, but these grants are designed to further reduce risk and improve emergency response.
All districts that applied for eligible safety features received an award, giving local schools flexibility to address their specific transportation safety needs.
