Northeast Ohio residents have plenty of ways to explore the outdoors in 2026, as both Summit Metro Parks and the Portage County Park District roll out a full slate of winter programs, community events, and recreation opportunities.

Summit Metro Parks is kicking off 2026 with winter programming designed to get residents outside and active. The park system continues its popular Winter Hiking Spree, offering guided and self-guided hikes across the county’s trail system. Visitors can also recycle their live Christmas trees at designated drop-off locations, where they’ll be turned into mulch for park use.

Additional highlights include nature education programs, wildlife walks, and volunteer opportunities throughout the season. The park district is also promoting its 2026 desk calendars, available at select locations, and encouraging community support through its specialty license plate program, which helps fund park improvements.

Looking ahead, Summit Metro Parks will host events like the Wild & Scenic Film Festival in Akron, the Mother’s Day 5K, and a wide range of outdoor programs for all ages.

The Portage County Park District is also welcoming the new year with a variety of outdoor experiences and educational programs. Visitors are encouraged to explore winter hiking opportunities, take part in seasonal programs, and enjoy the district’s natural spaces throughout the colder months.

Park officials continue to emphasize outdoor recreation, environmental education, and community connection through guided hikes, volunteer opportunities, and hands-on programs for all ages. The district also encourages residents to stay engaged through upcoming seasonal events and educational offerings.
