Flu activity is rising nationwide and locally, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Summit County Public Health.

Nationally, the CDC reports increasing flu cases, hospitalizations, and deaths as the season ramps up. Influenza A, particularly the H3N2 strain, is dominating early activity. So far this season, the CDC estimates nearly 3 million illnesses, 30,000 hospitalizations, and 1,200 deaths nationwide. Health officials stress that flu season is just beginning and urge vaccination and early treatment.

Locally, Summit County is already seeing high flu activity. During surveillance weeks 8 and 9 (most recent data available), positive flu tests nearly doubled, rising from 16 to 39 cases. Influenza A remains the most common strain. Hospitals reported four influenza-related admissions over the two-week period here, with three in the most recent week. Emergency room visits and lab testing both increased, signaling broader community spread.

Wastewater monitoring from the Akron Water Reclamation Facility also shows high levels of influenza A, supporting clinical data that flu activity is increasing across the region.

Public health officials recommend anyone six months and older get a flu shot if they haven’t already, use good hygiene practices, and stay home when sick to help slow the spread as flu season continues to intensify.
