The Akron Police Department Headquarters will undergo a $67 million dollar rennovation, starting next year with the replacement of three elevators, as well as three heating and cooling lines.
Akron Mayor Shammas Malik released a statement explaining why they decided to rennovate the old building at 217 S. High St., instead of building a new one, or moving to a different location.
Ultimately, the full renovation of Stubbs was chosen for several reasons. The renovation allows for a phased approach which will spread costs out over several budget cycles. By renovating Stubbs, the city prevents another building in the downtown footprint from becoming a vacant structure in need of repurposing or demolition. This also saves on the cost that would be needed to secure the Stubbs building if vacated.”
He added, “I feel that this path is the best one to ensure that we have a long-term solution for our Akron Police Department that is safe, effective, welcoming to the community, and fiscally responsible.
