The holidays can be joyful, but the pressure to make everything perfect can also be overwhelming. Cleveland Clinic psychologist Dr. Dawn Potter says many people feel stressed this time of year because they’re trying to please everyone and stay in the holiday spirit.
If you’re feeling burned out, she suggests starting by figuring out what’s causing your stress. Cutting back on a packed schedule can help, and it’s important to remember it’s OK to say no. Even while making time for friends and family, setting aside moments just for yourself can boost your mood.
Dr. Potter also encourages trying new traditions if old ones feel too demanding. “You have a choice about what you do for the holidays,” she said.
And to avoid last-minute panic, plan ahead and give extra time for travel. Also, try not to leave shopping until the eleventh hour.
A little self-care can go a long way toward making the season feel merry instead of stressful.
