Certain sights, smells, and sounds this time of year can instantly transport us back in time. Cleveland Clinic psychologist Dr. Susan Albers says holiday nostalgia is that warm, bittersweet feeling tied to memories: a mix of joy and longing that brings comfort and a break from stress.

Simple moments can trigger it, like favorite foods, movies, or traditions from childhood. Nostalgia can also make us feel more connected to our loved ones.

But Dr. Albers notes there can be a downside: too much dwelling on the past may highlight loss and leave us feeling emotionally drained.

Her advice? Stay present and be open to creating new traditions this holiday season.
