An Akron Public Schools student just lived out a dream on national television.

Firestone CLC senior Troy Weiss, an aspiring fashion designer, appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show last week, and walked right into a surprise meeting with one of his biggest heroes: Oscar-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell, an Akron native known for Wicked, Hamilton, The Color Purple, and more.

Troy thought he was simply invited to talk about his love of fashion during the show’s Wicked-themed episode. Producers flew him and his mother to New York, and he showed up in full Wicked-inspired colors — confident, charismatic, and completely in his element.

He told Clarkson how starting at Firestone finally gave him the freedom to express himself: “The hallway was my runway. I wanted people to know my name.” Troy also shared how he balances his packed schedule, from leading the Black Students Union and symphonic choir to competing on track and bowling teams.

Then came the moment. Clarkson told him she had a surprise, and Tazewell walked on stage. Troy instantly stood, bowed, and could barely speak, repeating, “My soul is rejoicing.”

Tazewell praised Troy’s confidence and creativity, telling him, “You’re a lot further ahead than I was at your age.” He also gifted Troy tickets to the Broadway musical Death Becomes Her, featuring costumes Tazewell designed.

Back home, Firestone held a watch party with about 50 students and staff, many dressed in the show’s pink and green Wicked colors. Troy’s mother, Veronica Neal, said she vetted every producer to make sure the invitation was real, and was thrilled to watch her son shine.

Teachers say Troy is a natural leader, always “dressed to impress,” and a role model for younger students. He plans to study fashion design at Kent State University and join the National Guard.

His mother says the experience was unforgettable. “We are so humbled for this opportunity… and who knows what the future holds?”
