An Akron police officer shot and seriously injured a man, a little after 9PM Tuesday night, in the 2700 block of Albrecht Avenue, in Ellet.

Police say they were called to the scene of a fight, and when they got there; they found an intoxicated man, pointing a gun at multiple people. Moments later, they say one of the officers, who has been with the police department for four years, discharged his weapon, striking the man who was later transported to the hospital, after they administered aid, and called in paramedics.

Now, the officer who shot the suspect has been placed on paid administrative leave, and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into the incident.

After their investigation is complete; the case will be submitted to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office for review before being submitted to the Summit County Grand Jury for evaluation.

In addition, the Akron Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards and Accountability will conduct a separate internal investigation. The results will be provided to the Police Chief and the City of Akron Police Auditor.

The incident was first reported in a Facebook post overnight by Lodge 7, of the Akron Fraternal Order of Police.

This is how they describe what happened:

This evening on Albrecht Ave, there was an officer-involved shooting. According to initial reports from citizens, a man armed with a semi-automatic handgun was pointing it at others. When officers arrived, they encountered an uncooperative individual and were forced to make a split-second decision to ensure their own safety andthat of the community. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) responded to the scene and will carry out  an independent investigation. We will share more information as it becomes available. Akron FOP Lodge 7 will continue to stand firmly behind our members, who show up every day to keep the community safe.
