The Trump administration will provide only half of normal food stamp benefits for November, drawing from the USDA’s contingency fund during the ongoing government shutdown. Nearly 42 million Americans rely on SNAP benefits, including 1.4 million Ohioans, and some may not see payments for weeks as states reprogram their systems to handle partial payment.

The city of Akron is stepping up to help fill the SNAP gap. The Akron Beacon Journal reports with more than 51,000 residents (roughly 27%) in the city missing their food benefits, because of the federal shutdown, City Council has approved up to $100,000 for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. That follows Summit County’s $250,000 contribution last week to help meet the spike in demand.

Feeding Medina County and the Salvation Army in Wadsworth and Medina are stepping up to help as well. An emergency food distribution will be held today (Nov. 4) from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Buckeye Woods Park in Medina, followed by a countywide food drive from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Medina Salvation Army and Wadsworth Salvation Army locations. No registration required.
