The Student Athlete of the Week segment is powered by NECA-IBEW and Akron Children’s Hospital.
This week’s athletes are from Archbishop Hoban High School. 
 
Lina McCarthy is a three-year varsity letter winner. Lina has helped the Knights girls soccer team win 3 consecutive district championships. She moved to goalie for the first time this Fall and has excelled, allowing only 21 goals in 20 games, including 9 shutouts, helping the Knights to a 17-2-1 record and their first appearance in the state final four since 2015. Lina also maintains a 3.9 GPA and is an important member in many Hoban extracurricular activities. She is also a member of the girls basketball team and Italian Club, in addition to serving as a student ambassador. Lina’s team-first attitude embodies Hoban’s core values, and she is a treasured member of the Class of 2027.
 
Tommy Gaffney is a four-year letter winner in cross country and recently earned his first trip to the state championship meet, where he placed 42nd out of 215 runners. Earlier this season, he broke his own school record with a time of 15:53 at the Northwest Invitational on August 30. Tommy is also a three-year letter winner in track and field and has a 3.9 GPA. He is a member of National Honor Society, Earth’s Guardians, and is a student ambassador. Tommy’s commitment to excellence is an example for all, and he is a valued member of the Class of 2026.
