1590 WAKR Student Athlete Program Showcased Our Area's Finest Young Citizens.
Thursday, May 14th will stand out as a night to remember for many of our WAKR Student Athletes. Throughout the scholastic year, Ray Horner has been searching area high schools for the young men and women who exemplify excellence in the classroom, in their chosen sports and in their community.

As Ray eloquently outlined in his opening remarks, these are not kids who have been handed the breaks; they made the best of their time and energy. They were unselfish in their commitment and kept the promise of doing their very best everyday of their young lives.

All of us at 1590 WAKR and the generous sponsors of the WAKR Student Athlete Program wish all our graduating seniors, and those who still have time before the next stage of their academic or work careers, the very best.
Thank you for making our future brighter!

Student Athlete Banquet, 2009
Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen,

I mentioned to someone today how excited I was for this Student Athlete Banquet here tonight and their response was "all another get together for the privileged few", with that said I immediately changed my coarse for my open and wanted to talk to you about "The Privileged" here tonight in front of us.

These young men and women, these Student Athletes, have been through the same difficulties that teens have to handle in today's society. Tonight, in this room, we have students who have battled back from disease, students who have had dramatic family losses and students who have had to handle the stress of broken families. These Student Athletes have proven to not only be leaders on the field, coarse, court or tank but have also shown the inner strength to lead inside their home during difficult times.

They have taken on all comers: from the Bulldogs to the Grizzlies, from the Rams to the Falcons, from the Indians to the Black Tigers. They've also taken on the stress of being a High School Student: the strength to say "NO", the discipline to say "YES" to the task of completing another school assignment when others take to the streets, and the confidence to go down their own path and to not follow others.

So here tonight we have future Lawyers, Doctors, Politicians and Community Leaders. We also have current State Champions, Team Captains and Scholarship winners. Back to the word "Privileged", from my conversations with these Students during my travels from August until May.

They feel privileged to have support in the home; they feel privileged to be a Wildcat, a Knight, or a Warrior. The feel privileged to be part, and I might say an important part of their community and school. And most importantly, to a student, the message I received loud and clear from them is that they feel privileged to have parents like you here tonight. Parents, Coaches, and Teachers. Thank you for delivering to us here tonight, our version of the Privileged
